Visual differentiation between infected carious dentine & sound, re-mineralizable dentine by its ability to selectively dye the carious dentine. ability to selectively dye the carious dentine. However, detector dyes are not specific to bacteria and can discolor surrounding healthy tissues as dentino-enamel junction or the circumpulpal dentine.  Bacterial counts obtained from radiologically sound fissures were low, and when lesions were radiographically visible in dentin, a significant increase in dentin infection was found.
